'Mastermind' of California jail escape has long past

Published January 28, 2016

Associated Press

The man authorities say is likely the 'mastermind' of a daring jail escape in California has fled legal trouble three times prior to the recent breakout from a maximum security jail.

Hossein Nayeri fled to Iran after authorities say he tortured a man with a blow torch and chopped off his penis.

An attorney says Nayeri also fled overseas in 2006 after he crashed a car in a drunken driving accident, killing a classmate.

And in 2012, he led police on a high-speed chase and then escaped on foot after abandoning a car packed with surveillance gear and GPS trackers.

Court papers indicate Nayeri — who served in the U.S. Marine Corps — has bipolar disorder.

Defense attorneys in his previous and current case did not return requests for comment.
