Man subdued by off-duty detectives after Hollywood stabbing could face attempted murder charge

Published May 03, 2016

Authorities say a man subdued by two off-duty New York police detectives after stabbing a Russian tourist in Hollywood could face an attempted murder charge.

Los Angeles Police Officer Jane Kim says 54-year-old Donald Offerman is in custody Thursday in lieu of $100,000 bail.

He is suspected of using a large kitchen knife to attack a tourist in his 20s who was on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with his family Wednesday.

The two off-duty detectives, in Los Angeles on police business, saw the attack and held Offerman until Los Angeles police arrived.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Kim didn't know where Offerman lives or whether he has an attorney.

Police say the wounded tourist is expected to survive following surgery.

Investigators say the attack was unprovoked.
