Man pleads guilty to threatening Newtown residents in days following 2012 school shooting

A Venezuela man has pleaded guilty to making threatening phone calls to Newtown residents in the days following the 2012 school shooting in Connecticut.

Thirty-one-year-old Wilfrido Cardenas Hoffman acknowledged in federal court Thursday in Hartford that he placed the calls after watching television coverage of the massacre at home in Venezuela. He was arrested in June at Miami International Airport while traveling to Mexico from Venezuela.

Cardenas told the judge he has been taking anti-psychotic medication since September. He has been detained since his arrest. A defense attorney said she will request that Cardenas be sentenced to time served when he is sentenced Feb. 12.

In light of Cardenas' diagnoses and a plan for him to receive treatment in Venezuela, prosecutors are not taking a position on the sentence.
