A 46-year-old man who jumped bail after a fatal car crash in upstate New York 17 years ago has pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports (http://bit.ly/2hv7tFm ) Benjamin Carrera also pleaded guilty Tuesday in Orange County Court to a felony count of bail jumping.

Carrera admitted to being drunk when he crashed a car in the city of Newburgh in November 1999. The pre-dawn crash killed his friend, 24-year-old Felix Santiago Cortez.

Carrera was free on bail when he fled New York in 2000. He was found this fall living under an assumed name in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was arrested on alcohol-related charges.

The Mexico native faces up to 13 years in prison when he's sentenced Jan. 19. He could face deportation after serving his sentence.
