Man accused of raping girl, killing mother pleads not guilty to rape and murder charges in NY

The man charged with raping a 10-year-old girl and killing her mother after a carjacking at an upstate New York mall has pleaded not guilty to rape and murder charges.

Local media outlets report that the plea was entered on David Renz's behalf Friday morning in a Syracuse court by his lawyer, who declined to comment afterward.

According to an indictment unsealed Wednesday, the 29-year-old Renz forced the woman and her daughter into their car at gunpoint after they had left a suburban mall on March 14. Authorities say he bound them both with cable ties and then raped the girl.

Shortly after, the mother fought back, allowing her daughter to escape. Officials say that's when Renz strangled and stabbed the woman to death. He was arrested that night.
