Madison Parish students suspended after protest over conditions

Police and the superintendent visited Madison High School after a group of students walked out of class and stood on a nearby hill to protest conditions at their school.

The News-Star reports the group of approximately 15 students, led by junior Qweonna Blair, said they did not have enough books or teachers and they didn't feel the school's administration treated them with respect.

Superintendent Lisa Wilmore met with the students Tuesday after the walk-out.

Blair said the group asked Wilmore for teachers and books, a student council and better communications.

Wilmore said books are already on order and the number of teachers is sufficient according to state law.

Blair said she and other students who participated in the peaceful protest were suspended "until further notice" with no explanation given.
