Letter reveals government's earlier reaction to UVa probe

In a previously secret letter that was later withdrawn, federal officials censured the University of Virginia over issues of sexual violence on campus.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1oNmAMC ) reports officials last year concluded the university had "abdicated" its legal responsibility to act on reports of sexual violence within the school's powerful Greek system and took a "hands off" approach.

The criticism was part of a 39-page letter sent to university officials on Aug. 31, presenting the findings of a four-year-long investigation done by the U.S. Education Department Office for Civil Rights.

Four days later, a senior education official withdrew the letter. The university says it was riddled with inaccuracies.

A shorter, milder missive was issued later that month. The newspaper obtained the unreleased letter through a Freedom of Information Act request.
