Lawyer: Man suspected of stealing mosque's donation box will surrender once he completes rehab

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

A lawyer for a man suspected of stealing hundreds of dollars from the donation box at a New Jersey mosque says his client will turn himself in once he completes an out-of state rehab program.

The attorney, Lawrence Bitterman, would not provide NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1Kzyz7v ) with further details about the program that Haziq Shah is scheduled to complete in March. But he says South Brunswick police are aware that the Edison resident is in treatment.

Middlesex County authorities charged Shah with burglary, theft and criminal mischief after several hundred dollars were taken from the Islamic Center of Central Jersey in November.

Shah is accused of entering the mosque and spending about 45 minutes cutting into a wall to get to the donation box, while worshippers walked past unaware of what was happening.
