Lawyer: Client's husband was attacked after accused rabbi's congregations got $60,000

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

Jurors in the case of a rabbi who allegedly used brutal tactics to force unwilling Jewish husbands to divorce their wives have heard from the lawyer of a woman who sought the rabbi's services.

NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1BayM9O) reports Fredric Goldfein testified Monday.

Goldfein says Rabbi Mendel Epstein instructed him to wire $60,000 to two congregations that Epstein led. A few days after the money was moved, the husband of Goldfein's client was attacked by three men in Pennsylvania.

Goldfein, testifying for the federal government in exchange for immunity, said he was thought the money was going to the husband as part of his agreement to grant his wife a religious divorce.

On cross-examination, Goldfein said Epstein never spoke to him about using physical force to obtain the divorce.
