Lawsuit filed in Kentucky Speedway 'racing experience' death alleges steering wheel fell off

The family of a 30-year-old amateur driver killed in a crash at Kentucky Speedway last year filed a lawsuit, alleging that the racecar's steering wheel broke off in his hands as he roared around the track at more than 100 mph.

Stephen D. Cox, a pharmacist from Ohio, crashed into a wall on September 14, 2014 during the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience, a traveling event where amateur drivers pay to drive racecars. He died from his injuries a week later.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday lists the Rhode Island-based Racing Experience and Kentucky Speedway as defendants, alleging they use faulty equipment and poorly trained staff.

In a statement, Rusty Wallace Racing Experience said the company "takes extraordinary steps" to keep its customers safe. Kentucky Speedway didn't respond to a request for comment.
