The last of three men convicted of starting a campfire that later destroyed five homes east of Los Angeles has been sentenced to probation, but he likely will be paying restitution the rest of his life.

U.S. District Court Judge George Wu sentenced 24-year-old Jonathan Jarrell to three years of probation Monday. Jarrell and two others convicted in the Colby fire also must pay $9.1 million in restitution to homeowners and agencies that fought the January 2014 blaze in the foothill suburb of Glendora.

Jarrell's attorney, John Hanusz, says he and Jarrell are grateful to Wu for the consideration he gave to their arguments. Hanusz declined to comment further.

Federal prosecutor Amanda Bettinelli says residents affected by the fire have been left devastated and that everyone is just grateful no one was killed.
