Ku Klux Klan robe to be sold in New Hampshire; auctioneer cites garment's historical value

The white robe of a Ku Klux Klansman from Rochester, New Hampshire, is on the auction block.

Auctioneer Scott Morrill says a woman found the robe in her attic. The woman removed the KKK's distinctive scarlet patch with a white cross to clean the robe and found her father's name inscribed there. Nobody in the family knew he was affiliated with the white supremacist hate group.

Morrill said Tuesday that he debated whether to sell a symbol of hate but, as he has done with Nazi paraphernalia, decided the historical value of the garment outweighed other concerns.

The veteran auctioneer can't find another example of one being sold this way, so has no idea what it could fetch when it's sold Tuesday night.

He declined to reveal the woman's name, saying she wished to remain anonymous.
