Kennecott Utah Copper lays off 15 employees, eliminates 55 other jobs

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. has laid off 15 employees and eliminated other jobs because of a landslide that damaged an ore pit west of Salt Lake City.

Another 25 workers were offered other jobs in the company, and Kennecott says it cut 30 vacant positions.

That makes 70 job reductions, the most recent for a company trying to recover from an April landslide that cut ore production.

Kennecott said in a news release that it regrets the hardship on workers and their families.

The company says the landslide cut 2013 production targets by 30 percent.

University of Utah scientists have calculated that the landslide was North America's largest non-volcanic event in modern history. They say it carried enough rock, dirt and debris to bury New York's Central Park under 66 feet of rubble.
