Jurors resume deliberations at Arias sentencing retrial after lawyer says panel at impasse

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

Jurors have resumed deliberations at the Jodi Arias sentencing retrial after a judge denied a mistrial request by her lawyer.

The deliberations entered their fifth day on Wednesday.

Arias was convicted of murder in 2013 after a lengthy trial that became a sensation with its tawdry revelations about her relationship with victim Travis Alexander and the brutal way he was killed. That jury deadlocked on her punishment.

Defense attorney Kirk Nurmi sought the mistrial ruling Tuesday, saying the jury had reached an impasse while trying to decide whether to sentence Arias to life in prison or death.

If the current jury can't decide on a sentence, the death penalty would be removed as an option and the judge would decide if Arias serves life in prison or gets a chance for release after 25 years.
