Judge to decide whether to try girl as adult in fatal fight

Published November 03, 2016

Associated Press

A judge will decide whether one of three girls charged in a Delaware high school restroom assault that left another girl dead will be tried as an adult.

News media outlets report that on Tuesday a Family Court judge scheduled a hearing to decide the matter on July 11.

The 16-year-old is charged with criminally negligent homicide. She's accused of hitting Amy Joyner-Francis in the head and torso during a confrontation at Wilmington's Howard High School of Technology. Two other girls charged with third-degree criminal conspiracy are scheduled for trial June 15.

The Associated Press is not naming the girls because they are juveniles.

Joyner-Francis had a pre-existing heart condition. Authorities say she died of sudden cardiac death, with a contributing factor of physical and emotional stress due to physical assault.
