A Maine judge has agreed to drop a manslaughter charge against a girl who was 10 when she was charged with causing the death of an infant in her mother's care.
The judge's decision was announced in court Wednesday. The remainder of the plea discussions was being held behind closed doors under rules governing juvenile proceedings.
The Associated Press generally does not identify juveniles accused of crimes. The now-12-year-old was charged in the July 2012 death of 3-month-old Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway.
Prosecutors and the Fairfield girl's attorney said last week that they'd agreed on a deal to drop the felony manslaughter charge in favor of misdemeanors.
The girl is believed to be the youngest person to face a manslaughter charge in Maine in at least 30 years.
