A JetBlue passenger was in custody Wednesday after he tried to bring a gun through security at JFK International Airport in New York City, the New York Daily News reported.

JFK security screeners noticed the handgun in the man's luggage which caused him to flee the airport terminal, leaving his wallet and shoes behind.

The passenger eventually turned himself into Port Authority police later Wednesday, after his attorney arranged a surrender.

According to police sources, the man did not intend to hijack a plane, but apparently forgot the gun was in his bag.

The security incident, which occurred at 8:17am Wednesday morning, caused six flight delays and eight flight cancellations.
