According to Dr. Ivan Misner, founder of Business Network International (BNI), if your want referrals, you've got to work your network. In this video, he says that while it's OK to go to a networking event with someone you know or a coworker, don't hang around just that person.

"It's not net sit or net eat -- it's called network," he says. "You want to work with your staff to talk to them about getting around."
