iPhone app helps NYC cops catch theft suspect

Published January 13, 2015

Maybe the Find My iPhone app could be renamed Find My Robber.

Police in New York City say they were able to track a suspect accused of cutting the pants pocket of a sleeping subway rider and stealing his phone and wallet.

They say the victim activated Apple's Find My iPhone application and called police Friday after the theft. Two officers went to the phone's last recorded location and used the app to track the phone's movement.

Authorities say one officer then activated the app's alarm feature, causing the phone to ring loudly. A 30-year-old Bronx man was taken into custody.

Police say they also found another stolen cellphone and two debit cards on the suspect. He faces charges of grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
