Investigators found fired nuke commander may have made counterfeit poker chips

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

A criminal investigative report obtained by The Associated Press says the Navy admiral fired last year as the No. 2 commander of U.S. nuclear forces may have counterfeited $500 poker chips with paint and stickers.

Although Rear Adm. Timothy M. Giardina's (gee-ahr-DEE'-nahz) punishment for using fake gambling chips was announced earlier this year, it has not been revealed until now that evidence points to Giardina's possible role in making the counterfeit chips.

Investigators found his DNA on an adhesive sticker used to alter the poker chips. But he was not prosecuted because military lawyers were unsure the evidence would stand up in court.

Giardina was removed from his post as deputy commander of Strategic Command but he remains on the payroll as a Navy staff officer in Washington.
