Rocky Mount police said in a press release that Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital officials determined a woman admitted with severe bleeding Tuesday night may have given birth, though she denied it.

Police say officers found evidence consistent with a birth at the woman's home and relatives said one family member threw away soiled bedding at Franklin County trash collection sites. Police say the infant was found in a dumpster and pronounced dead on the scene. The body was taken to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

Police Chief Ken Criner says in the release that police are working with prosecutors and hope to determine Wednesday whether charges are warranted.
