India objects to US religious commission

India says that a U.S. religious freedom commission does not have legal standing to pass judgment on the situation there.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom said Thursday that India refused to grant visas for a visit by a three-member delegation to assess religious freedom conditions in the South Asian nation.

The Indian Embassy in Washington said Friday that a foreign entity like the commission does not have standing to pass judgment and comment on the state of its citizens' constitutionally protected rights.

The commission provides policy recommendations to U.S. lawmakers and issues an annual report. It says it has been prevented from visiting India two other times.

The chief U.S. envoy on combating human trafficking was barred from visiting India in November.
