Illinois man gets 10 years for DUI

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A judge has sentenced a 22-year-old Champaign man to 10 years in prison for a drunken driving crash that nearly killed a 1-year-old boy.

Judge Chase Leonhard sentenced Montrell Davis on Thursday for his conviction on aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol. Davis also was convicted of obstructing justice for lying to police about who was driving.

The News-Gazette reports that Davis' attorney asked for probation. But in handing down the sentence, the judge criticized Davis, saying he's "unable to admit he did anything wrong."

The 2011 accident left the child hospitalized for about two months, and he may suffer long-term developmental delays.

Tests show Davis' blood-alcohol content was 0.188 percent at the time of the crash -- more than twice the legal limit in Illinois.
