Houston's police chief says the 2010 videotaped beating of a black teenage burglary suspect made him sick to his stomach and gave the department a "black eye."
Police Chief Charles McClelland Jr. told jurors Tuesday in Houston that fired officer Drew Ryser mistreated the teen during the arrest.
Ryser is on trial this week on a misdemeanor charge of official oppression. He faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
Ryser was one of four officers fired and later indicted.
Security video from March 2010 appears to show several officers hitting then-15-year-old Chad Holley. The teen later was convicted in juvenile court of burglary and given probation.
Ryser's attorneys say the ex-officer was following textbook procedures to arrest a suspect he believed might have been armed.
