High-speed chase through San Diego closes traffic into Mexico at Otay Mesa border crossing

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

A high-speed chase that ended with gunshots has closed traffic into Mexico at one of San Diego's border crossings.

The Otay Mesa (oh-TAY' MAY'-suh) crossing was shut to southbound vehicle and pedestrian traffic around 10:30 a.m. Saturday after California Highway Patrol officers confronted a driver who led them on a nearly 100-mile chase.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection supervisor says the crossing is open from Mexico into the U.S., but could be closed well into the evening going the other way.

The chase began after a suspected carjacking in the Riverside County city of Perris just after 9:30 a.m. It reached speeds of 100 mph as the suspect drove through San Diego County.

City News Service reports that on police radios, officers said shots were fired as the chase ended near the border crossing.
