Hearings on future of Orleans jail resume in US court

Hearings on whether control of the New Orleans jail should be taken away from the local sheriff are set to resume in federal court.

Lawyers for the U.S. Justice Department and inmate advocates have been arguing that a third party should be appointed to run the violence-plagued jail. Sheriff Marlin Gusman's lawyers are expected to begin telling his side of the story Monday.

Gusman agreed to reforms at the jail in a consent decree approved by U.S. District Judge Lance Africk in 2013. But his critics say he has been too slow to comply with the decree's requirements. And they say dangerous violence has continued even after a move to new facilities.
