Hawaii shooting suspect has previous gun charge

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

A pastor's son accused in a Hawaii shooting rampage that killed a mother of 10 and injured two others had been previously charged with illegal firearms possession.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Tuesday that Toby Stangel was granted early release from court supervision and had the 2004 charge dismissed in 2007, even though he committed two more crimes in the interim.

The 28-year-old is accused in a 17-minute shooting spree Friday on Honolulu's main highway. The newspaper reports that when he was arrested, authorities found a knife, a gun clip and bullets in his car.

In June 2005, Stangel pleaded guilty to drunken driving and speeding, and he was arrested in January 2006 for misdemeanor criminal property damage and later found guilty.
