Guatemalan pleads guilty to drug charges in Virginia

A Guatemalan man has pleaded guilty to transporting cocaine on aircraft registered in the United States.

Court records show 36-year-old Fernando Josue Chang-Monroy of Guatemala City entered the plea Thursday in U.S. District Court in Richmond. He faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced July 18.

According to federal prosecutors, Chang-Monroy conspired with another unidentified person to buy a U.S.-registered Beechcraft King Air C90, and later a King Air E90, from an undisclosed seller in Virginia. He resold the planes to Honduran and Columbian drug trafficking organizations that used them to transport cocaine in Central and South America.

The Honduran drug ring destroyed the C90 after it delivered 1,000 kilograms of cocaine from Venezuela and Honduras. The E90 was destroyed by Venezuelan military.
