Group touts safety record after Alaska bear attack

Officials of an outdoor leadership school say they preach safety to all those who go on their excursions, including four young students who were mauled by a grizzly during a survival training excursion in the Alaska wilderness.
They also teach about the inherent risks of being in the wild.
Bruce Palmer, a spokesman for Wyoming-based National Outdoor Leadership School, says 11 students have died since the organization was founded in 1965. He says there have been no deaths since 1999 when a teenager apparently fell down a deep hole in Alaska's Matanuska Glacier.
The organization runs programs for teens and adults in 19 locations worldwide.
The students attacked by the grizzly encountered the bear Saturday night in the Talkeetna Mountains north of Anchorage. They were rescued early Sunday.
