Grandmother pleads guilty to solicitation to commit murder

Published August 05, 2016

A Virginia grandmother has pleaded guilty to charges of solicitation to commit murder after losing custody of her grandson.

The Culpeper Star-Exponent (http://bit.ly/2aGzUMs ) reports that 44-year-old Tammy Smith Kelly of Stevensburg pleaded guilty Monday to four counts following the presentation of evidence against her on the first day of trial.

The Culpeper County Sheriff's Office says Kelly lost custody of her grandson last fall and attempted to arrange the killing of his maternal grandparents and their two adult children.

Kelly was arrested on Nov. 19, 2015, after an investigation.

Defense attorney David Randle attempted to use an insanity defense in the case, but Kelly was subsequently deemed competent to stand trial.

Kelly's sentencing has been set for Nov. 7.
