Colorado police detained Friday a 12-year-old girl for suspicion of attempted murder after she was accused of trying to kill her mother with bleach because the mother took away her iPhone.
The Boulder County sheriff’s office says the mother twice smelled bleach in her drinks and confronted her daughter, who has been turned over to juvenile authorities.
The sheriff’s office said the mother first felt sick earlier this month after drinking a smoothie, ABC News reports, and a few days later again smelled bleach in a glass she was using to drink water.
The mom confronted her daughter, who allegedly told her she wanted to kill her because she took away her iPhone, according to the sheriff's office.
The girl also had allegedly poured bleach into her mother's water carafe, the sheriff's office said, according to ABC.
The mother contacted authorities from the hospital, where she was treated after becoming ill, and asked police to investigate.
The girl is being held at the Boulder County Juvenile Center on two counts of attempted first-degree murder, according to the sheriff's office.
"She had pre-planned this a couple different times," Sgt. Bill Crist of the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff’s office says the district attorney will decide what charges to pursue against the girl.
