Georgia Girls' Lemonade Stand Robbed of Money Intended For Sick Child

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- A callous couple is accused of stealing $130 from a lemonade stand three young Georgia girls had set up to raise money for a two-year-old developmentally disabled boy in need of treatment for a rare intestinal disorder, WMAZ-TV reported Tuesday.

Chelsea Edwards, 13, was operating the stand with two friends in Warner Robins, about 90 miles southeast of Atlanta, when a couple approached and asked about the price of the lemonade Saturday.

"The man bent down and seen the money jar, and he grabbed it," Chelsea told the television station.

"He flew in the car, and the girl was running after the car," she added.

Authorities identified the alleged thieves as Gage Allen Turner, 20, and Amber Umbarger, 21, and said Umbarger was arrested at the scene after Turner sped off.

Chelsea said she was robbed of $130 that was intended for her two-year-old cousin Logan Varnadoe, who this week is heading to Cincinnati Children's Hospital for treatment.

"My husband is having to take off work. We're going up there together with Logan, facing something very serious," the boy's mother, April Varnadoe, told WMAZ-TV.

In an effort to sweeten up a sour experience, Chelsea's neighbors refilled the lemonade stand's money jar with cash to help Logan and his family.
