Funeral held for New Jersey woman whose disappearance led to Long Island serial killer probe

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

More than three years after her remains were found, a graveside funeral service has been held for a New Jersey woman who disappeared near where 10 victims of a suspected Long Island serial killer were discovered.

Shannan Gilbert was a 24-year-old escort from Jersey City who disappeared on May 1, 2010. Her remains were found near a beach highway in December 2011.

She was last seen in Oak Beach, a community several miles from where the 10 others were located during the search for Gilbert.

Gilbert's mother, Mari, and her attorney dispute police assertions that Gilbert's death was not connected to that of the other 10. Police theorized she may have drowned in a marsh.

Local funeral directors donated their services for the funeral.
