Fugitive jail inmate facing transfer back to Los Angeles

Published February 10, 2016

Associated Press

A murder suspect who was mistakenly released from a California jail won't fight his transfer in custody from Nevada back to Los Angeles.

Steven Lawrence Wright appeared in shackles and a red jail jumpsuit Wednesday and waived extradition in Henderson Justice Court.

The 37-year-old Wright wasn't represented in court by a lawyer, and he didn't speak about the charges against him.

His lawyer in Los Angeles, Stacie Halpern, told The Associated Press by telephone that she believes he has a good chance of being cleared in a new trial stemming from an overturned murder conviction.

He had been behind bars since 2011 in the shooting death of a 47-year-old man in Pasadena, California.

Police say he was released Jan. 30 due to a paperwork mistake.

He was arrested Monday in Boulder City.
