Freight train cars derail in Southwest Chicago, police say

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Chicago police say a freight train has derailed on the city's Southwest side, but it was unclear how many rail cars were involved.

Hector Alfaro, with Chicago police News Affairs, told The Associated Press the derailment occurred early Sunday and there were no immediate reports of any injuries.

He had no further information and referred calls to CSX because of the rail line involved. A call to an after-hours telephone listing for CSX seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported in its online editions that more than 2,500 people were left without power in the Southwest Side Ashburn neighborhood after the pre-dawn derailment.

The newspaper said maps indicate trains run on an elevated track at that location bordering on a residential area.
