Freed after years in solitary, woman faces jailhouse charges

Published March 21, 2016

Associated Press

A New York City woman freed last year after three tumultuous years on Rikers Island is facing criminal charges from a jailhouse confrontation with guards.

Candie Hailey will appear before a Bronx judge Monday on a felony charge of criminal mischief. If convicted she faces up to seven years in prison.

She has pleaded not guilty. Her attorney says the charges stem from her poor treatment on Rikers.

The 32-year-old Hailey's chaotic time at Rikers and subsequent struggle to return to society was documented earlier this year by The Associated Press.

At Rikers she served more than two years in solitary confinement and was hospitalized at least eight times for suicide attempts there.

Advocates are urging the Bronx district attorney to drop the charges in the interest of justice.
