Florida couple forced to move after sinkhole opens in backyard

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A large sinkhole forced a north Florida couple out of the home they built 37 years ago.

The 80-foot-long and 40-foot-wide sinkhole opened late Friday and early Saturday in the backyard of the home. Robert "Robin" and Rhonda Matheny moved out of the Jonesville house on Sunday.

The Gainesville Sun reports the couple moved into their son's home in Gainesville.

A geologist inspected the sinkhole and told the couple the sinkhole would likely move closer to the house. They moved their belongings out on Sunday.

By Sunday the sinkhole had already engulfed a barbeque grill and was inching closer to a shed filled with boxes of holiday decorations.
