First hearing postponed for NC man who planned assassinations in US to support Islamic State

Published July 22, 2015

Associated Press

A federal court hearing is being postponed for a 19-year-old North Carolina man charged with wanting to support the Islamic State group by launching a killing spree in the United States.

A detention hearing in Asheville for Justin Nojan Sullivan of Morganton scheduled for Wednesday was postponed. His defense lawyer, a public defender appointed to him, said Sullivan's transfer by authorities would come too late for her to consult her client. Sullivan was held near Charlotte after his arrest Monday on charges including attempting to provide material support to Islamic State.

The defense lawyer didn't return messages Wednesday seeking comment.

An undercover FBI employee in contact with Sullivan since early June reported that Sullivan said he wanted to kill hundreds by using biological weapons, bullets coated with cyanide and a gas bomb.
