Firefighters Battle Big Blaze in Indiana

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

PAOLI, Ind. -- Firefighters are battling a large fire in Paoli's town square, and authorities are asking people to stay away from the southern Indiana town until the blaze is under control.

Crews were called to the Paoli (Pay-OH'-lee) town square just before 7:30 a.m. Saturday. WLKY-TV reports that fire officials said the blaze started in a former bank building, but spread to small businesses and apartments.

Firefighters say people in the building when the fire started were able to get out safely.

The Times-Mail of Bedford reports that tankers from nearby communities were called to bring more water to the scene. The Orange County Sheriff's Department said the fire was still not under control at noon and urged people to stay away from the town about 45 miles northwest of Louisville, Ky.
