Fire at Macy's N.Y. Flagship Store Sends Shoppers to Streets

A fire at Macy's flagship store in New York sent shoppers streaming onto the wet New York City streets Wednesday.
The fire began at just after 11:40 a.m. ET in the sub-basement of the giant Macy's on 34th St, just south of Times Square, New York City Fire Department spokesman Mike Castellano told NewsCore. It was extinguished a little over an hour later and there were no injuries, he said.
The store was evacuated shortly after the incident and it was not immediately clear if shoppers were being allowed back in. The New York Times described it as"an all-hands fire."
It's not the first time the Herald Square superstore has been shut down for fire. On Sunday Dec. 20, 2009, in the heart of Christmas shopping season, the store was evacuated for a little under two hours after a small fire broke out under an escalator.
