Fiery head-on crash kills 5 on Pennsylvania highway

Published March 03, 2016

A coroner in eastern Pennsylvania says forensic testing will be needed to identify five people killed in a fiery crash when the vehicle they were traveling in slammed head-on into a tractor-trailer.

Officials say it happened Wednesday afternoon near the city of Allentown in Upper Macungie Township.

Township police chief Edgardo Colon says the vehicle heading north on state Route 222 crossed the median into the path of a southbound truck. All five people in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver suffered minor injuries. He's been identified as Richard Eckrote of Allentown.

Lehigh County coroner Scott Grim says autopsies will be performed Thursday. He says forensic testing on the victims could take several weeks.
