Feds seek year in prison for 'senseless' shootings of 5 wild mustangs by 2 Nevada men

Federal prosecutors in Nevada are seeking a year in prison for two men who admitted they shot and killed five wild mustangs last fall about 150 miles northwest of Reno.

Federal probation officials had recommended six months in prison, but Dan Bogden, U.S. attorney for Nevada, says the stiffer sentence is warranted because there was "no justifiable reason" for the "senseless" killing of the horses.

Sentencing had been scheduled Tuesday for 45-year-old Todd Davis and 36-year-old Joshua Keathley, both of Lovelock. It was postponed until Nov. 3 to give both sides more time to prepare.

Bogden noted in a new court filing that a year in prison may help provide the training and education that the two unemployed men need to get jobs.
