Feds probe 6 eagle deaths at utility's wind farm

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

Federal authorities are investigating the deaths of at least six golden eagles at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's wind farm in the Tehachapi Mountains.

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/qPRafH) on Tuesday that the probe at the DWP's Pine Tree Wind Project is ongoing. She provided no further comment.

The utility said at least six eagles have been struck dead by wind turbine blades at the facility in Kern County.

DWP spokesman Joe Ramallo said the utility is concerned about the deaths and are cooperating with the investigation. He says the DWP will also expand its monitoring bird activities in the Pine Tree area and will work with authorities to develop an eagle conservation plan.
