Experts expected for trial of police officer accused of abusing Indian man in Alabama

Published June 12, 2015

Associated Press

The federal trial of an Alabama police officer accused of injuring an Indian man during a confrontation could become a battle of experts.

Court records show both prosecutors and the defense intend to present expert testimony in the September trial of Eric Sloan Parker.

Prosecutors plan to present testimony from Parker's boss, police Chief Larry Muncey of Madison, Alabama. Documents show he's expected to testify that Parker used excessive force.

But a document filed this week shows that the defense will call a martial arts instructor who says Parker was justified in using force against 57-year-old Sureshbhai Patel (suh-RESH'-beye pah-TEL') in February.

The man was visiting relatives when he was slammed down by police called to a suburban neighborhood.

Parker is being fired, and he faces a state charge.
