Ex-Ohio State band director files 2nd lawsuit against university claiming defamation, slander

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

Ohio State's fired marching band director has filed a new lawsuit claiming the university has so damaged his reputation that he can't get work "despite his previous renown."

Jonathan Waters filed the suit Friday in the Ohio Court of Claims. He seeks $1 million in damages for violation of privacy, defamation and slander.

The university dismissed Waters in July after an internal investigation found he ignored a "sexualized culture" inside the celebrated band. He denies the claims and seeks reinstatement in a separate federal lawsuit.

Waters' iPad-designed halftime shows were considered revolutionary and garnered hundreds of thousands of YouTube views. Friday's suit says he's applied for more than 40 high school and college marching band jobs but has received no offers.

A message seeking comment from the university wasn't immediately returned.
