Ex-Massachusetts funeral director accused of improperly storing bodies, embezzlement

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

The former owner of a Massachusetts funeral home has been indicted on charges of improperly caring for dead bodies and embezzling more than $375,000 from clients.

Prosecutors say 54-year-old William Ryder, of South Hadley, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Hampshire Superior Court.

Prosecutors allege Ryder embezzled the money between 2001 and 2014 from 70 clients who thought they had purchased "pre-need" funeral arrangements, when in fact Ryder funneled the money into his own business account.

He's also charged with failing to properly care for five bodies, including lack of embalming and improper storage.

His lawyer did not immediately respond to a message, but in the past said his client has "significant health issues."

Ryder's funeral home was closed, but reopened under new ownership. Ryder also faces several lawsuits.
