Ex-headmaster returning to Boston Latin School amid turmoil

Published June 28, 2016

Associated Press

A familiar face is returning to lead the Boston Latin School, which has been plagued by allegations of civil rights violations.

Former Boston Latin headmaster and Boston Public School superintendent Michael Contompasis was named interim headmaster on Tuesday. The 76-year-old Contompasis takes over for Lynne Mooney Teta, who resigned last week.

The changes come after the local U.S. attorney's office in March said it was launching an investigation into allegations of racial harassment and discrimination at the school, which is the nation's oldest public school.

A school district report found Boston Latin administrators failed to adequately respond to a student's threat to lynch a 15-year-old black classmate.

School Superintendent Tommy Chang says Contompasis will serve for about a year while the district conducts a nationwide search for a new headmaster.
