Ex-Chicago cop linked to torture heads to prison

A man who claims Chicago police tortured him into confessing to murder has been ordered released as the ex-lieutenant he accused of threatening him reports to prison.

A judge dismissed charges against Eric Caine on Wednesday. He's expected to be released Thursday.

Both Caine and his co-defendant claimed then-Chicago police Lt. Jon Burge and officers under his command tortured them into confessing to the 1986 murders of a Chicago couple. It's been seven years since Caine's co-defendant was pardoned and freed from death row.

News of Caine's impending release comes the same day Burge reported to federal prison for his conviction lying about the torture of suspects.

About 20 men still behind bars are waiting for a state commission to investigate their allegations of being tortured into confessions.
