Editor: Pulitzer sweep shows 'breadth and scope' of New York Times' photography

The New York Times' assistant managing editor for photography says the paper's sweep of the photo categories in this year's Pulitzer Prizes shows "the breadth and scope" of their work.

Tyler Hicks won for his vivid breaking news coverage of a militant attack on a mall in Kenya. Josh Haner won for feature photography for a photo essay on Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs last year in the Boston Marathon bombing.

Assistant Managing Editor Michele McNally says Hicks was near the mall when gunfire broke out and rushed to action. The veteran war photographer started with a point-and-shoot and then called his wife for a helmet, flak jacket and his professional cameras.

She says Haner's personality helped Bauman open up during awkward moments in his recovery.
