Driver charged in Washington crash that killed 2 students, injured 2 others

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

Prosecutors have charged a Bellingham, Washington, man with two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault in a crash that killed two high school students and injured two others out walking during a gym class.

The Bellingham Herald reports (http://is.gd/AkxWnb ) that charging papers filed Monday say 34-year-old William Klein fell asleep in the passenger seat of his SUV after the collision, needed to be shaken awake and didn't seem to be reacting to the seriousness of the crash. The documents say the state trooper who made those observations concluded Klein was possibly under the influence of drugs.

Klein's lawyer has said while his client acknowledged past marijuana use he had not used pot on the day of the crash and was not impaired by drugs. Blood test results are pending.

Arraignment is scheduled Friday.
